A bold new attraction has alighted in Edmonton, Alberta’s Borden Park. Part architectural folly, part technical feat, the eye-catching pavilion—called Vaulted Willow—is the work of Marc Fornes and his experimental Brooklyn design studio, TheVeryMany. Producing the otherworldly 20-foot-tall form (distinguished by branching limbs and catenary curves) required not only advanced computer modeling but also innovative construction methods. Designed to be as sturdy and lightweight as possible, the project is composed of 721 aluminum shingles, their bright colors yielding a striated pattern. Remarkably, given the complex shape, this ethereal skin is entirely self-supporting. In effect, surface and structure ingeniously become one, while creating a very alluring patch of shade.
