There are apps for writing, apps for sketching, and apps for collaging. Name any creative process and—you guessed it—there’s an app for it. But as any artist or designer knows, creating is rarely confined to a single process, which is why Morpholio, a company that develops digital tools for artists, designers, and architects, has introduced Journal. The new iPad and iPhone app brings together the versatility of a traditional notebook with the capacity and speed of a digital tool, allowing users to sketch, collage, add notes, schedule tasks, and more all in one place.
Journal uses a booklike interface, organizing the mixed-media pages in an easily accessible format. The basic app is available for free and can be customized (through in-app purchases) with special “papers”; up to eight pens, brushes, and pencils, which can be used to draw and paint on a blank canvas or on top of any media; and 16 color palettes developed by graphic design firm MTWTF. Notes can be added on or off the page or used as tabs to mark your place. And perhaps best of all, users can create an infinite number of pages, meaning your ideas and designs are always right at your fingertips, not somewhere in a stack of notebooks.
