In Dubai, more is more and bigger is better. So Meydan One, a newly announced mixed-use development, should fit in quite nicely with its planned world-record-breaking structures, such as the longest indoor ski slope, the tallest residential tower, the highest restaurant, and the largest dancing fountain.
The ski slope (covered in artificial snow, of course, given the desert climate) will be 1.2 kilometers long, or 3,937 feet, The National reports. Germany’s AlpinCenter is the current record holder at over 2,100 feet. Ski Dubai, the world’s largest indoor ski resort and the Emirates' first, is located in the Mall of the Emirates; the longest run is about 1,312 feet.
Developer Meydan is behind the project, which will cost an estimated $6.8 billion. Set for completion before 2020, the development will extend from the Meydan race track to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s highest tower. Visitors will also be able to check out an indoor sports facility, plus a water park, marina, and beach.
Dubai aims to attract 20 million visitors by 2020, up from 13.2 million last year. Meydan’s tourism-minded development will also include a hotel and a 652-store mall, not to mention the 1,378-foot-long dancing fountain.
Dubai One, the development’s residential tower, will be the tallest in the world at 2,333 feet and will house more than 78,000 residents. The tower will surpass India’s World One, which at 1,450 feet will be the world’s tallest, at least temporarily, when it’s completed in 2016.
