We’re not going to sugarcoat it to you: Placing a rug in your kitchen seems a little silly. (Think of all of the crumbs lurking in the fibers!) But trust us: The ever-so-popular trend can be extremely easy to care for if you pick the right style.
Take Liz Morrow ‘s home, shown above, for example. The interior designer and blogger placed a vintage looking, woven piece in her plant-filled kitchen after completing a major transformation of the space.
“My rug is a kilim from Rejuvenation ,” she explains. “I loved the pattern, but I also liked it for the kitchen because it was a flatweave and less likely to get stuff stuck in it.”
Believe it or not, kitchen rugs aren’t as fussy as you’d think. While Morrow has to shake it out every few weeks—and occasionally vacuum her kilim—she adds her rug is relatively low-maintenance.
Adding a rug to your kitchen can add some warmth and personality to an otherwise utilitarian room.
“The client loved the idea of tying in some of the warmer elements like the brass hardware by incorporating a vintage runner with rust tones,” explains Kira Obermeier, founder and principal at Kira David Design , who designed the charming kitchen above. “[When] paired with a rug pad, it helps keep her two little boys from slipping and falling when they’re rushing to get out of the house in the morning!”
Not as into the vintage look? There’s more than one way to embrace the trend. Blogger Jenna Shaughnessy selected a preppy, beachy option for her space, but she also understands the power of a flat weave.
“I was looking for something with a coastal feel that had a grayish tint blue—and not that bright, in-your-face navy blue that a lot of blue and white rugs have,” she says. “I also liked this particular rug because it’s a flatweave rug, so it doesn’t shed and has a low pile. It’s easy to clean and not a tripping hazard in the kitchen.”
Accidents happen, which means spills and stains are inevitable. To help curb the mess, pay attention to washing instructions and color scheme prior to making a purchase.
“When you have kids, you either need a washable rug or one with dark colors to avoid the inevitable stain you’re going to get,” Shaughnessy says.
