The rooftop of architect Le Corbusier ’s iconic Unité d’Habitation in Marseille, France , has been transformed by a vibrant art installation. Paris-based Swiss artist Felice Varini painted a series of optical illusions on the concrete space that now belongs to the art center Marseille Modulor , or MAMO. His red and yellow designs mark various parts of the structure, which, when viewed from certain angles, appear to dramatically connect. They align from three vantage points on the terrace to create a colorful geometric installation. Situated atop arguably one of the most groundbreaking works of Brutalist architecture , the unique art piece provides an element of playfulness for visitors to enjoy. The outdoor art space was originally intended to be an open-air gymnasium, but now acts as a buzzing cultural space.
Varini specializes in site-specific art. He used a similar design concept at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which emphasized the importance of perspective. When working with such prestigious buildings, he takes the history, materials, function, and design very much into consideration, while still putting forth his signature style.
Various artists have contributed to MAMO since its opening, including Dan Graham and Daniel Buren. Varini’s work will be on display until October 2, 2016.
