Last week, developer Townscape Partners unveiled renderings for a mixed-use development designed by Frank Gehry at the base of the Hollywood Hills on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. The plans call for five distinct structures that will house rental apartments, condominiums, and retail venues and will be tied together by an open-air plaza accessible from the street.
Gehry’s plan offers 334,000 square feet of combined space, but keeps the elevation of the buildings located on Sunset and Crescent Heights Boulevards low to match the pre-existing architectural makeup of those thoroughfares. If completed, 8150 Sunset Boulevard will join a list of four other California Environmental Leadership Development Projects (ELDP). To qualify for this coveted designation, a development must include an investment in California of more than $100 million; create high- wage, highly skilled jobs; achieve LEED Silver certification; and result in zero net additional emissions of greenhouse gases. The four current ELDPs are the Apple campus in Cupertino, the McCoy Solar Project in Riverside County, the Soitec Solar Energy Project in San Diego County, and the Mission Bay Event Center in San Francisco.
