The National Academy has recognized 19 visual artists and architects for their lifelong artistic contributions. As members, they are expected to continue furthering the arts in the U.S.
The inductees, who were elected by their peers, include artists Dawoud Bey, Katherine Bradford, Nick Cave, Suzan Frecon, Sharon Horvath, David Humphrey, Jonathan Lasker, Mary Lucier, Mary Miss, John Newman, David Salle, Andres Serrano, Elena Sisto, and Kyle Staver. The architects in this year’s class are James Carpenter, Brad Cloepfil, James Cutler, Ralph Johnson, and Signe Nielsen.
Since its creation in 1825, the New York–based institution has named more than 2,000 Academicians, among them Winslow Homer, Cindy Sherman, Jasper Johns, Frank Gehry and I. M. Pei.
“The 2015 inductees are emblematic of the distinct vision and extraordinary talent that has been synonymous with the National Academy since its founding,” says academy president Bruce Fowle. “Moreover, the election of these artists and architects is in recognition of their immense influence and impact on the American cultural conversation, as well as of the profound contributions each will continue to make in the years to come."
This year’s class will be inducted into the National Academy at a ceremony in New York on October 27.
