Once a traveler passes through airport security, access to the fresh air is limited to the opening of the jet bridge or the occasional walk across the tarmac to the plane. But JetBlue passengers traveling through New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport can now await their departures outside, at the airline’s new T5 Rooftop. Conceived by global design firm Gensler (which is also responsible for the T5 terminal and T5i international extensions) and built in collaboration with Arup, Turner Construction, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the 4,046-square-foot space offers views of Manhattan and Eero Saarinen’s iconic TWA Terminal.
Open to all who pass through security (not just VIPs), the rooftop includes seating for 50 people, a children’s play area, and a place to walk pets. The sustainably focused design features a wood deck accented with aluminum furniture and planters, while the landscaping uses native plantings such as oak-leaved hydrangeas, lilyturf, and sweet spire. With free Wi-Fi and three food-and-beverage carts by purveyors including Brooklyn’s Blue Marble ice cream and Hebrew National hot dogs accompanying the views, spending time in the outdoor oasis may leave passengers wishing for a delay.
