After two years of discussions, it was announced in June that New York architects Tod Williams and Billie Tsien would design the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Where in the city was still unknown. Until now. The Chicago Tribune has reported that President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have selected the historic Jackson Park as the site for the Obama Presidential Center. Although a formal announcement isn’t expected until sometime next week, sources have confirmed that President Obama plans to have his presidential library located a few blocks away from the University of Chicago—an institution where he spent 12 years as a professor of law before his time in public office. The decision to build the roughly $500 million structure in Jackson Park is significant: Obama’s library will be the first presidential library to be constructed in an impoverished neighborhood. The gesture gives many Americans a glimpse into the type of work President Obama will pursue when his term ends in January 2017. Construction on the library is expected to begin sometime in 2017, with a projected completion year of 2021.
