The Los Angeles Lakers have announced plans for their new headquarters, designed by Rossetti in association with Perkins+Will. A building on a five-acre site in El Segundo, California, will house two full practice courts and two half courts, with player-training facilities and amenity spaces on the first floor and administrative offices on the second. Players from the Lakers minor league team will play at the site in a new 750-seat exhibition arena. The design of the headquarters focuses on integration of all aspects of the franchise, encouraging celebrity athletes and top-level executives to mingle with all of the team's professional staff.
The building’s façade, which vividly displays the team’s logo (passengers flying to and from nearby LAX will be able to see it from the air), is inspired by the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy, awarded to the victors of the NBA Finals, a prize the Lakers have won 16 times. Reflective bronze fins offer passersby tiny glimpses of the building's high-profile activities while providing light and shielding those within from excess heat. The headquarters is expected to open in 2017.
