Over the past 15 years, the London-based Serpentine Galleries have selected some of the world’s most renowned architects to build a temporary summer pavilion in the city. Now, for the first time, they’re turning toward a different demographic. Through October 18, the galleries are hosting the inaugural Build Your Own Pavilion: Young Architects Challenge, open to all U.K. citizens ages 8 to 14.
The budding designers are tasked with creating a small-scale model of a pavilion. Pavilions are the Serpentine Galleries’ structure of choice because of their versatile nature: They can serve nearly any purpose and take many forms, which gives their architects complete stylistic freedom—a perfect canvas for innovative students.
The young participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback from a panel of experts, who will judge the entries and select the best designs to feature on the Serpentine Galleries’ website. The panel includes José Selgas and Lucía Cano of SelgasCano, the architects of the 2015 Serpentine Pavilion; Julia Peyton-Jones, director of the Serpentine Galleries; Hans Ulrich Obrist, codirector of the Serpentine Galleries; and David Glover, CEO of Intelligent Engineering.
The competition will foster a supportive community among participants through workshops held across the U.K. as well as an interactive website where young architects can submit their designs, view other entries, and connect with their peers. The Young Architects Challenge is divided into two age groups, 8 to 10 and 11 to 14, and offers amazing prizes: First-place winners will receive an iPad loaded with 3-D CAD drawing software, and runner-ups will be given an architecture tool kit full of books and creative materials.
