When it comes to embracing your surroundings, this open-air hotel room—courtesy of Switzerland’s Null Stern Hotel—is the ultimate outdoor experience. No walls, no roof, and complete exposure to Mother Nature’s weather patterns makes this accommodation truly one of a kind. Designed by conceptual artists Frank and Patrik Riklin, the room was created for guests to experience a night with the stars, while showcasing the natural splendor of the Swiss landscape. As the Riklin brothers explain, “The landscape of Switzerland is the imaginary building of the new Null Stern Hotel version.” The twin brothers plan to implement their outdoor concept throughout various regions of the country.
Inspired by the motto “zero real estate”—the concept of creating a space with no walls and no roof—the design duo first tested out their alfresco accommodation concept back in 2008, after creating a nuclear bunker in Sevelen, Switzerland, touted as “the first zero-star hotel in the world.” The twosome—along with hospitality professional and business partner Daniel Charbonnier—adapted their unique idea to fit their latest outdoor design, which pushes the envelope in extreme hotel rooms.
Located in Safiental, Switzerland, the space comes complete with a standard double bed with built-in nightstands and two lamps. In the case of bad weather, the hotel offers guests a flexible cancellation policy. According to its website, the room is already booked through 2016, and is accepting reservations for 2017; From $253, zero-star-hotelom
