City beekeepers have an ally in industrial designer Francesco Faccin, whose “Honey Factory” provides a safer alternative to traditional hives.
The wood structure, which is about 14.5 feet tall, features a “chimney” at the top, where bees enter and exit. This height keeps them far from children and makes the hive less susceptible to vandalism. A glass panel is provided to protect the bees while making it possible to observe them. The hive is also designed to maintain a constant temperature and good ventilation.
Faccin collaborated on the project with Mauro Veca, a professional beekeeper and urban farmer. Commissioned by Marva Griffin for Salone del Mobile di Milano 2015, the new endeavor is now on display in the garden at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.
